Villeneuve in need of publicity

June 2012

1997 world Champion and washed-up has-been Jacques Villeneuve feels he hasn’t received enough media attention lately so has come out with some more controversial opinions with the sole purpose of gaining himself some column inches.

The failed pop star lambasted the current generation of drivers by referring them as “babies who play video games” and went on to claim that the modern crop of drivers don’t have to work as hard to get to the pinnacle of the motor racing ladder.

Of course Villeneuve, who used to admit to playing Grand Prix games on his Playstation to learn circuits and who got into the top level of motor racing on the back of his father’s name, is perfectly qualified to criticise these drivers. He also thinks Formula 1 has become too safe and more drivers need to die. Again, with his own father being tragically killed in a Formula 1 car, he is more qualified than, say, John Surtees, who not only survived a motorbike career but also survived the most dangerous era of Formula 1 only to see his son die in such a safe environment.

Since his forced retirement, return, second forced retirement and failed attempt at a re-return to Formula 1, Villeneuve has gone on to embarrass himself in NASCAR and inflict excruciating pain on Canadians with his terrible music. Since his dealings with Syrian dictators fell through, he has been lacking in publicity over recent months so these comments should go some way to bringing the Villeneuve name back to the public’s attention.
