Mercedes Admits It Has Run Out of Money, Immediately Blames Lando Norris

**BRACKLEY, UK** | Mercedes has admitted that it has “run out of money” to keep developing its Formula 1 car after Lando Norris won the Dutch Grand Prix and made the increasingly awkward decision to start looking competitive again.
Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed on Monday that Mercedes had no major upgrade planned until October, blaming a combination of budget constraints, the cost cap and Norris, who apparently has the extraordinary audacity to win races using money that is technically his own team's.
“We had a very good plan,” Wolff explained. “The plan was to remain comfortably ahead of everyone else until the end of the season. Then Lando started winning races, which was not in the spreadsheet.”
Norris has now won consecutive races in Budapest and Zandvoort, reducing the championship deficit to leader Kimi Antonelli. His latest victory, achieved after overtaking Antonelli following a restart, has apparently caused several Mercedes engineers to stare silently at their laptops while whispering the words “cost cap” repeatedly.
“We have calculated that an additional front wing would cost approximately £47,” said one anonymous Mercedes employee. “Unfortunately, our finance department says we have already spent £46 of that.”
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has welcomed Norris's recent confidence, describing the reigning champion as more assertive and mature.
This has alarmed Mercedes.
“We preferred him when he was psychologically vulnerable,” admitted one senior Mercedes strategist. “It was much easier to beat him when he was wondering whether he was good enough. Now he's overtaking Kimi and looking annoyingly pleased with himself.”
Mercedes driver George Russell has reportedly been told that the team's next major aerodynamic development will consist of “believing in the existing package”.
Meanwhile, Antonelli remains 59 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Russell, with Norris a further 24 points behind.
Red Bull, meanwhile, has apparently responded to the situation by reminding everyone that Max Verstappen has signed with the team until 2030, despite currently being 110 points behind Antonelli and having yet to win a race this season.
Verstappen declined to comment, although sources say he later asked whether the championship standings could be “fixed by turning the laptop off and on again”.
The FIA has confirmed it is investigating.
Ferrari has also entered the increasingly chaotic title battle, with Lewis Hamilton reportedly demanding that the team listen to him more carefully after strategic decisions at Zandvoort cost him valuable time.
Ferrari responded by announcing a meeting to discuss whether it should have another meeting.
The meeting has been postponed.
The reason given was “strategy”.
With eleven races remaining, Formula 1 therefore finds itself in the unusual position of having a championship fight involving Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and possibly Red Bull, while half the paddock insists the other half has the fastest car.
